Zebra Grass - Guide How to Care for

Updated: Feb 17, 2023

Caring for a zebra grass (Miscanthus sinensis ‘Zebrinus’) is a bit more complex than other grasses. This ornamental grass is a striking addition to any garden, but it requires a bit more attention than other grasses. Here’s what you need to know to keep your zebra grass looking its best.

First, it’s important to give your zebra grass plenty of sunlight. Zebra grass prefers full sun, though it can also tolerate part shade. In fact, too much shade can cause the grass to become leggy and thin.

Second, zebra grass needs plenty of water. This grass is drought tolerant, but it still needs regular watering to stay healthy. Water the grass deeply but infrequently, and avoid overwatering.

Third, you’ll need to fertilize your zebra grass. Use a balanced fertilizer, such as an all-purpose fertilizer, and apply it according to the directions.

Fourth, you’ll need to prune your zebra grass to keep it looking neat and tidy. Prune the grass in the spring and fall, and be sure to wear gloves when doing so. Prune to at least 6 inches from the ground.

Finally, you’ll need to watch out for pests. Zebra grass is susceptible to aphids, spider mites, and other pests. If you see any pests on the grass, spray them with an insecticidal soap or neem oil. Caring for a zebra grass may take a bit more effort than other grasses, but it’s well worth it.

This striking grass adds an exotic touch to any garden, and with the right care, it will look great for years to come.
